P/A Industries Engineering Department
The Mission:
The secret to success at P/A Industries is our ability to help our customers improve their profitability. In order to do this, we must understand their application, and be adept at fitting our equipment to their process. If done properly, the result will be significantly improved productivity and quality in their facilities. At the heart of this process is our engineering department, which is rich in the technical knowledge of coil handling equipment and press room automation. Our expertise provides our customers with a powerful competitive advantage.
The Methods:
Our engineering effort consists of innovative new machine designs, expansion of existing product lines, application engineering for customers' specific requirements and continuous upgrading of our standard product lines:
New Machine Designs:
We must anticipate our customers' needs, and innovate product solutions which will satisfy these needs. To do this our engineers are charged with the responsibility of knowing where the technology is going, and figuring out how to get our customers there first. At any one time we have several new machine designs underway which are intended to take the industry to new levels of automation and productivity. We use concurrent design principles to shorten design cycle times, always with the goal of designing simple, reliable systems and assemblies.
Expansion of Existing Lines:
As we develop new designs and applications, the next logical step is to expand these new machines to the complete range of P/A Industries' product line. This work requires consideration of most stock thicknesses and widths, as well as the various speed and feed parameters. This process allows for our newer engineers to learn our capabilities as well as the requirements of our industry.
Application Engineering:
Perhaps the heart of our engineering efforts. This involves analyzing the customer's process parameters, and applying our systems and knowledge to provide him with equipment which operates in his environment. Often this can mean utilizing some of our standard machines, which will do everything that is needed. In this case, our response time can be very fast, as we will have the equipment in stock, or most parts in house to be able to produce it quickly. In the case where special designing is necessary, we have the expertise necessary to fit our designs with the required modifications, or even design "from scratch". We strive to be a complete solution house for our customers, and they know they can lay their problems at our feet.
Continuous Improvement:
Due to our relentless dedication to continuous improvement, our products and processes involve the latest in technological advances in machine design and controls. We are constantly looking for ways to make equipment faster, more accurate, and less costly.
The Equipment:
Our engineers utilize the latest version of AutoCAD Mechanical 2000i for all their design work. This software is tailored for optimum performance in the machine design and engineering functions. Design creativity and engineering productivity are increased as many of the mechanical drawing functions have been automated to a few simple steps. New product development and custom machine designs can be completed quicker resulting in shorter delivery time to our customers. It is normal to find engineers on the production floor for consultation as well as for new or improved design enhancements. We maintain an up-to-date electronics laboratory, as well as a welding center, both for developmental work as well as customer application trials. Our Machine showroom doubles as a trial center for applications as well.
The People:
Exceptionally loyal and dedicated people, who are challenged toward independent thinking - to constantly question the status quo, are the heart of our engineering department. Within a teamwork environment, they work together to accomplish our goals in ways that constantly amaze us. The average working time is 20 years, with well over 100 years experience working within the machine tool industry. Our engineers understand that performance is measured in productivity and throughput. Reliability is critical, and reliable speed is everything. In an age of ceaseless change, being responsive isn't enough. We strive to anticipate the future and then create it.
